Charmed Life

While 3.9 million viewers watched VH1’s Flavor of Love 2 last fall, making it the No. 1 show in Black households, comedian Mo’Nique shook her head in shame at the way the contestants were showing out on national TV. “You had 7-year-old girls watching this, and it was extremely disappointing,” she says.

Never one to hold her tongue, Mo’Nique shared her thoughts about the show’s negative depictions during an unrelated meeting with VH1 executives. The suits listened, and a few brainstorming sessions later, Charm School was born.

In School, host Mo’Nique leads 13 former Flavor housemates down a bumpy road to personal growth. Joined by a turnaround team that includes Essence ’s own beauty director, Mikki Taylor, she steers the women through a series of self-help commandments, focusing on proper etiquette, social skills and positive conflict-resolution techniques. (No more spitting on each other, we hope!)

The New York Times' Charm School Article

Is strength charming? And by strength I don’t mean traps and lats, or even that elusive “strength of character” that no one has probably had since 1963, if anyone ever had it.

What I mean is the quality that television’s ubiquitous “strong women” supposedly possess, which — if Lifetime, Oxygen, Oprah, Tyra Banks and “Grey’s Anatomy” can be trusted — appears to involve some combination of suffering, guffaws, brick-house bodies, petulance and capricious flights of fury.

This comes up because VH1’s fizzy “Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School Starring Mo’Nique” purports to teach the gorgeous feline thugs from the dating show “Flavor of Love” the ways of gentlefolk. But in teaching charm, it emphasizes strength as much as delicacy and decorum.

Perhaps charm, when you think about it, is the wrong quality to try to teach the hammy women who lit up the screen when they appeared to court, en masse, the weird and wily hype man Flavor Flav. On that earlier show, they had charm to burn. And to the extent that strength means hot tempers and decent one-liners, they had all that, too. Perhaps on the new series they’re being brought to reform school more than to charm school. The first episode took them to boot camp.
